Unbill

AI healthcare advocate

You just got the news.
Now the bills start.

Unbill handles the paperwork, deadlines, and bills so you can focus on what comes next.

Our story

Built from four days of unanswered questions.

On a Friday afternoon, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. The care team closed for the weekend. We spent the next four days with no clear next step, no persistent case, and a growing pile of questions the system wasn't built to answer.

That experience, along with the bills, the Reddit threads, and the institutional friction that followed, became Unbill. We built the advocate we wished we'd had: one that stays with you, cross-checks every record, and prepares the evidence-backed response when the system wants faxes and tight deadlines.

What the film shows

  1. Friday, 4:52 PM: a diagnosis arrives just before the care team closes for the weekend.
  2. Unbill opens one case to carry the paperwork and financial questions while the care team handles the medical questions.
  3. The estimate, authorization, EOB, operative record, and itemized bill are indexed into the same timeline.
  4. Four records support one anesthesia service while the itemized statement lists two. That conflict is worth questioning; it is not proof of an error, and whether a second clinician was involved remains unknown.
  5. Unbill prepares the evidence-backed inquiry and a conditional dispute draft for customer review.
  6. Updates remain content-minimized, with sensitive details behind sign-in.

What patients are up against

The cost is national. The consequences are personal.

U.S. health care spending, 2024

$5.3T

That means about $15,500 in health spending per person.

National health expenditures reached $5.3 trillion and accounted for 18% of the U.S. economy.

$5.3 trillion is a national total. Families experience the system one bill, one premium, and one unexpected cost at a time.

CMS National Health Expenditure data, 2024

What people owe

$220B+

Americans owed at least $220 billion in medical debt at the end of 2021.

The federal estimate counts reported medical debts above $250 and caps each person’s reported debt at $225,000.

Medical debt turns the cost of care into decisions about food, housing, and every bill that comes next.

Who carries it

100M

About 100 million adults carried health care debt in KFF’s broad 2022 measure.

KFF’s broad 2022 measure included medical or dental bills, payment plans, credit cards, bank loans, and money borrowed from family or friends.

The appointment ends, but the financial strain follows people home.

Billing errors

43%

of U.S. adults said they had received a medical or dental bill they thought contained an error.

The 2022 KFF survey asked about bills received during the previous five years. This measures suspected errors, not a confirmed national error rate.

Among adults with health care debt who received a bill they thought was wrong, 32% said a disputed bill had been sent to collections.

Industry estimate

Billing advocates and other health professionals have estimated that up to 80% of medical bills contain errors. Becker’s reported the estimate in 2016; it is not a representative national survey rate.

The appeal gap

<1%

of denied HealthCare.gov in-network claims were appealed internally by consumers.

44%

of appealed denials were reversed by insurers.

Appeals were rare, but insurers reversed 44% of the denials consumers appealed.

Evidence first

Sometimes clarity means the bill is correct. Unbill shows what the evidence supports, not what produces the most alarming result.

Your records and AI responses are not used to train foundation models or shared with model providers.

Private to your account

Case access is scoped to your account. Another customer cannot use your records in their answers.

Encrypted and in your control

Clinical records are encrypted at rest. Connections are read-only, and you can disconnect them.

Ask Unbill

Turn confusing paperwork into a clear next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Unbill and how can it help me?
Unbill is a private advocacy workspace that builds one coherent healthcare case from records that usually live in separate places. During the founding beta, use synthetic records or documents you have properly redacted. Unbill helps compare what each source says, surface conflicts or missing information, and prepare the questions and administrative materials needed to move forward.
How does Unbill differ from traditional medical bill negotiation services?
Traditional medical bill negotiation services may handle one case at a time and charge a share of the savings they secure. Unbill uses software to organize and cross-reference the evidence as soon as records arrive, preserve the source of every important fact, and keep the work moving in one place. Unbill will use a flat household subscription and will never charge a percentage of savings.
Can Unbill manage healthcare disputes for my whole family?
The planned household membership will support the people in one household while keeping each person's cases and records separate. It is planned for Q4 2026 and may be available sooner. Product timing may change, and household membership is not available for purchase today.
What kinds of documents can I upload to Unbill?
The case model supports itemized bills, EOBs, written estimates, prior authorizations, and clinical notes, plus pathology or lab reports, denial letters, pharmacy records, plan documents, and financial-assistance paperwork. During the current founding beta, only add synthetic records or documents you have properly redacted unless Unbill separately approves your account for another data-handling phase.
Why does Unbill cross-reference multiple records instead of just checking my bill?
An itemized bill shows what was charged, but it cannot audit itself. A useful review compares the bill with what was estimated, authorized, documented in the clinical record, and processed by insurance. That is where conflicting dates, codes, descriptions, and amounts become visible.
How does Unbill differ from ChatGPT Health?

ChatGPT Health is an informational assistant for summarizing clinical data and tracking personal wellness. Unbill is an evidence-driven healthcare financial advocacy platform built around the financial case.

Focus: ChatGPT Health helps you understand lab results and medical history. Unbill examines itemized bills, billing errors, denials, and medical debt.

Action: ChatGPT provides conversational insights. Unbill runs forensic reviews across bills, EOBs, clinical records, and CPT codes, then prepares evidence-grounded appeal materials for your review when the records support action.

Enterprise scale: Unbill is designed to integrate with self-insured employer benefit plans through outcome-based economic models that reduce administrative waste.

In short: ChatGPT helps you understand your health data. Unbill helps you fight an unsupported medical bill.

What happens when an error or discrepancy is flagged?
During today's beta, Unbill organizes the supporting evidence and prepares a dispute draft or doctor discussion guide for you to review. The roadmap goes further. After you review and explicitly authorize the next step, Unbill will transmit an evidence-indexed dispute or inquiry, track delivery and response deadlines, organize replies, and keep the follow-through moving inside your case. External transmission is not available today.
What specific billing discrepancies does Unbill detect?
Unbill compares records for duplicate or inconsistent line items, mismatched dates or descriptions, EOB and provider-statement conflicts, and charges that disagree with an available estimate or authorization. A flag identifies a conflict to review. It is not, by itself, a final determination that a charge is wrong.
How does Unbill protect my sensitive medical data?
Case information stays behind your authenticated account, and Unbill does not sell personal information. Notifications are content-minimized, so diagnoses, balances, provider names, and records remain behind sign-in. See the Privacy Policy for current handling details.
How much does Unbill cost?
Access during the founding beta is free, with no payment method required. After the beta, Unbill will be offered as a flat household subscription, with one household charge and separate private cases. Unbill does not and will never charge a percentage of savings. Final subscription pricing has not been set and may change before launch.
I want to partner with Unbill or offer it to my members. How do I get in touch?
We welcome conversations with benefits brokers, self-insured employers, and patient advocates. Email support@unbill.ai or visit the Partnerships page to start a discussion.
